Avoidance

by Billy Collins

When I spotted him on the street
walking ahead of me with that same woman,

I pretended to look into the window
of a store that happened to be empty,

but when I glanced up
and saw them waiting on a corner

for the light to change,
I realized it was only someone who looked like him—

then I wondered all the way home
where in the world he could possibly be.
