The Tirelli dressmakers have actively shaped the career and given birth to many talented costume designers in both theater and cinema. The release of the book Tirelli 50: The Wardrobe of Dreams celebrates 50 years of activity for the Italian sartoria founded by Umberto Tirelli in 1964.
The book—curated by Masolino, Silvia e Caterina d’Amico; Mr. Tirelli’s friends and collaborators—is a precious visual documentation of the founder’s life-long passion, beginning with the very first pieces he acquired to build a tens-of-thousands strong archive of historical costumes. The costumes include some of the legendary pieces in cinema, including those used by costume designer Piero Tosi, whom two years ago was awarded an Oscar for his career in collaboration with director Luchino Visconti; or Gabriella Pescucci, who also won an Oscar for the costumes of Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence.
After Mr. Tirelli’s death in 1990, Sartoria Tirelli has continued under the supervision of early partner Dino Trappetti. Recent collaborations include work for Matteo Garrone’s fantasy flick Tale of Tales and Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. We’ve had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Dino Trappetti who has shared with us some insights on what he reckons was “the best investment of his life.”
